The Enduring Beauty of Handcrafted Tradition—Kojima Shoten’s Warm Light from Kyoto
Since the late 18th century, during the Kansei era, a remarkable craft has been handed down in Kyoto for over two centuries. From splitting bamboo to affixing washi paper and painting on the final designs, each step is meticulously performed by hand using the traditional “jibari-shiki” technique.
It is this time-honored craftsmanship that softly envelops a gentle glow, warming hearts across the ages.
All materials are gifts from nature. Bamboo, washi paper, and even the paste used for binding exist within a cycle of sustainability, living beautifully within our everyday lives.
Yet Kojima Shoten is not content with merely preserving the past.
Its greatest appeal lies in its flexibility to embrace new ideas, such as avant-garde designs that highlight the transparency of the lantern’s frame or unexpected combinations of materials.
Feel the radiance where tradition and innovation coexist—take one in your hands and experience it for yourself.
Beyond each lantern lies a warm, enduring story. Would you like to invite a piece of that light into your own space?
Roca lights are made one piece at a time, after your order. Delivery takes about two and a half months.
